    Happy National Cheeseburger Day!

Rivaling Christmas and National Donut Day for “Most Popular Holiday in the World” is today’s National Cheeseburger Day.

By most accounts, the burger originated in the late 1800s, as a patty of fried or grilled ground beef. Since then, this fine delicacy has experienced many iterations, ensuring that even those averse to eating meat are able to participate in the day’s festivites.

    Balboa Discovers the Pacific Ocean

On this day in 1513, Vasco Núñez de Balboa became the first European to lay eyes on the Pacific Ocean. Balbao first saw the Pacific from the top of a mountain range in present-day Panama. A few days later, upon arriving at its shoreline, Balboa walked knee-deep into the salty water and claimed possession of the world’s largest ocean in the name of the Spanish sovereigns.

Balboa’s legacy lives on today, most notably in the name of Panama City’s main port, Balboa, the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal.

    Wulingyuan National Park

In a remote part of the mountains of China’s Hunan province lie over 3,000 spires of Cretaceous sandstone covered with clinging pine trees. The United Nations named Wulingyuan National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, calling it one of the most remarkable geomorphological spectacles that exists on our planet.

Tourists from all over mainland China and beyond trek to see the famed towers, which inspired the landscape in the film Avatar. To see more photos of the park, visit some of its most scenic vistas: Yuanjiajie Scenic Area 袁家界风景区, Hallelujah Mountain 哈利路亚山, 天门洞, and 百龙天梯.
